The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) clarifies categories for 'Health Drinks' & 'Energy Drinks' on e-commerce platforms. Only licensed products can be called 'Energy Drinks'. E-commerce platforms must recategorized these drinks based on their actual composition.
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) cracked down on misleading categorization of beverages on e-commerce websites. Certain "Proprietary Food" products, like mixes made with dairy or cereals, were wrongly labeled as "Health Drinks" or "Energy Drinks." FSSAI clarified that "Health Drink" has no legal definition in the FSS Act 2006 or rules/regulations under this act. Additionally, only products licensed under FCS 14.1.4.1 & 14.1.4.2 ( Carbonated & non-carbonated water based flavored drinks), standardized under sub-regulation 2.10.6 (2) of FSS (Food Product Standards and Food Additives) Regulations 2011 can be called "Energy Drinks." E-commerce platforms must now remove these drinks from the misleading categories and reclassify them based on their actual ingredients (e.g., Dairy Based Beverage Mix). This action ensures consumers have clear and accurate information about the products they're buying, allowing them to make informed choices.
