The Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution, through its Department of Consumer Affairs, has issued a draft notification concerning amendments to the Legal Metrology (Government Approved Test Centre) Rules, 2013.
This draft, dated January 10, 2025 (reference number I-30/10/2022-W&M), proposes changes under the authority granted by sub-section (1) read with clauses (n), (o), and (p) of sub-section (2) of section 52 of the Legal Metrology Act, 2009 (1 of 2010).
The amendment includes revisions to application procedures for test center recognition (Rule 5), the introduction of inspection teams (Rule 5), provisions for government test centers (Rule 5), fee structures (Rule 7), certificate issuance (Rule 8), verification locations (Rule 10), and updated lists of verifiable weights and measures (First Schedule), along with a new fee schedule (Fifth Schedule).
The rules will come into force upon publication in the Gazette of India, Extraordinary, Part-II, Section 3, Sub-section (i).
