Drugs (Ninth Amendment) Rules, 2026 – Inclusion of Navi Mumbai as Authorized Drug Import Airport.

The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has notified the Drugs (Ninth Amendment) Rules, 2026, amending Rule 43A of the Drugs Rules, 1945. The amendment adds Navi Mumbai to the list of airports authorized for drug imports, alongside Cochin and Thiruvananthapuram. The amendment comes into force from the date 03-july-2026.

The Central Government has issued the Drugs (Ninth Amendment) Rules, 2026 through Notification G.S.R. 561(E) under the powers conferred by Sections 12 and 33 of the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940. Prior to finalization, a draft notification was published on 28 January 2026 inviting objections and suggestions from stakeholders. Since no objections or suggestions were received within the prescribed period, the amendment has now been formally adopted after consultation with the Drugs Technical Advisory Board. The amendment modifies Rule 43A of the Drugs Rules, 1945 by substituting the existing reference to “Cochin and Thiruvananthapuram” with “Cochin, Thiruvananthapuram and Navi Mumbai.” As a result, Navi Mumbai International Airport becomes an authorized airport for the import of drugs, facilitating improved logistics and import operations within India’s pharmaceutical sector.
