The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has published the draft Food Safety and Standards (Safe food and balanced diets for children in school) Amendment Regulations, 2026, proposing specific criteria for identifying food products that are high in added fat, added sugar, or salt for the 2020 regulations.
Key points include:
- A new Regulation 7 is proposed to define foods high in added fat, added sugar, and salt.
- The proposed criteria are based on the Dietary Guidelines for Indians, 2024, issued by ICMR.
- High Fat: More than 4.2 g/100 g of added fat in solid foods or 1.5 g/100 ml in liquid foods.
- High Sugar: More than 3 g/100 g of added sugar in solid foods or 2 g/100 ml in liquid foods.
- High Salt: More than 0.625 g/100 g of salt in solid foods or 0.175 g/100 ml in liquid foods.
The notification is a draft, and stakeholders may submit objections or suggestions within 60 days of the Gazette being made available.
