New Amendments in Food Safety and Standards (Food Products Standards and Food Additives)

A notification was issued on 11 January 2023 by the Food Safety Standards Authority of India notifying the new Food Safety and Standards (Food Products Standards and Food Additives) First Amendment Regulations, 2023 concerning basmati rice, blended rice, non-meat products, fresh eggs, food additives, chocolate, milk and milk products.


New Food Safety and Standards (Food Products Standards and Food Additives) First Amendment Regulations, 2023 comes into force on 1st August 2023 and notifies the following:

  1. In regulation 2.1, sub-regulation 2.1.1, sub-regulation 2.1.2, sub-regulation
  2. 1.13, sub-regulation 2.1.19 are changed. 2. In regulation 2.3, clause 4 of sub-regulation 2.3.6 are changed.
  3. In regulation 2.4, clause 25 of sub-regulation 2.4.6 relating to basmati rice and clause 26 of sub-regulation 2.4.6 relating to blended rice are added. Also, clause 4 of sub-regulation 2.4.11 relating to formulated supplements for children is changed.
  4. In regulation 2.5, clause 2 of sub-regulation 2.5.2 and clause 1 of sub-regulation 2.5.3 relating to fresh eggs are changed.
  5. In regulation 2.6, the limit of formaldehyde is added after sub-regulation 2.6.1.
  6. In regulation 2.7, clauses 5 and 6 of sub-regulation 2.7.4 relating to chocolate are changed.
  7. In regulation 2.9, clause 1 of sub-regulation 2.9.14 and clause 5 of sub-regulation 2.9.30 are changed.
  8. Appendix A of the use of food additives in food products is changed.
  9. Appendix C of the use of processing aids in food products is changed.
