Sanitary Import Permit (only for products which contain animal product or animal, veterinary drugs etc) – Overview

The sanitary import permit is issued under Section 3 (a) of the livestock importation act 1898. The purpose of this permit is to authorize import of livestock and livestock products, any living or non-living products derived from animals, birds and insects. This permit also conveys the hygienic requirements that must be met by the exporting country prior to the entry of animal products into India as the livestock product can be contaminated with foreign illnesses that are uncommon in India. Hence, in order to reduce the chance of exotic diseases, the sanitary import permit calls for sanitary conditions to be approved by the official veterinarian of the exporting country. To obtain a sanitary import permit, applicants must register on the SIP website, and select the New Importer Registration. All the contact details and the application forms should be filled by the individual and the online application fees should be paid. On submission of the application, the approval letter of SIP permit is issued.

    Who Can Apply?

A sanitary import permit may be applied for by an individual or importer who is in the business of selling and marketing various livestock products and who has a valid Import Export Code (IEC), as well as by industries that require it for further processing.

    Essential Tips

The following are the main factors to consider for this license application preparation and submission process:
    • The product must adhere to the standards outlined in the Codex Standard and the Food Safety Regulations published under the FSSAI's various regulations.
    • An official sanitary certificate from the authorized officer of the consignment's country of origin should be included with the consignment.
    • There is no beef or any of its byproducts in any of the imported goods. The major potential obstacles or issues that could arise when completing or submitting an application include:
    • The application will be rejected in the absence of health certificates from the applicant's country of origin.
    • The product has to pass the required microbiological, chemical, and physical testing as stated in the COA.
    • The product list needs to be in predefined formats and include quantities.
    Expert Advise

According to our experts, applicants must ensure the following to avoid any delays or cancellation of your license:

    • Confirm the port of entry and dispatch because erroneous information could cause a shipment to get stuck at the port.
    • The shipping quantity needs to be confirmed prior to applying for SIP, since the letter of permission is only given for this quantity.
    • The product may become blocked at the port or could be rejected if the batch information does not match between the COA and shipping.
