On 11 October 2022, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India released a regulation in the Official Gazette to further amend the Food Safety and Standards (Labelling and Display) Regulations, 2020.
These amended rules will now be termed the Food Safety and Standards (Labelling and Display) Second Amendment Regulations, 2022, which will be enforced on 1 May 2023.
In the Food Safety and Standards (Labelling and Display) Regulations, 2020, the following are the key points of amendment-
The warning statement for Pan Masala i.e. CHEWING OF PAN MASALA IS INJURIOUS TO HEALTH, must cover 50% of the front-of-pack of the label
Labelling criteria of various types of bread have been defined. The newly introduced section lists out the nomenclature of various breads mentioned in column (2- the name of bread) which should comply with requirements cited in columns 3 (Specialty Ingredient/ 100 g flour) and 4 (Minimum amount of Specialty Ingredient as % of Flour).
The Minimum Specialty Ingredient in the case of Multigrain Bread should be a minimum of 10% in the 1st year of enforcement, and after it should be 20%."
Eg: 1.Whole Wheat Bread-Whole wheat flour (Atta)- Whole wheat flour should be at least 75%.
2. Specialty Bread-Milk bread-Milk solids-6%
