Guidelines for acceptance of recycled Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) as Food Contact Material (FCM-rPET)

FSSAI has issued new guidelines regarding the acceptance of recycled Polyethylene terephthalate as Food Contact Material (FCM-rPET). The notification, published on May 23, 2025, outlines the regulatory framework for the safe use of post-consumer PET in food applications.The guidelines also specifies that the FCM-rPET manufacturers need FSSAI authorization and regular audits to maintain compliance

Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has issued guidelines for the acceptance of recycled Polyethylene terephthalate (rPET) in food applications. These guidelines ensure food safety while promoting sustainability.

Key highlights:

• Only FSSAI-approved recycling technologies are permitted.
• rPET must undergo strict decontamination, migration, and challenge tests in accredited labs.
• Recycling processes include super-clean, melt-in, paste-in, and chemical recycling methods.
• Marking & Labeling: Products must display the FCM-rPET symbol with the percentage of recycled resin used.
• Manufacturers need FSSAI authorization by submitting necessary information as per FORM – I annexed in these guidelines and regular audits to maintain compliance.
