Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) published a notice regarding the operationalization of the FSS (Labelling and Display) Amendment Regulation, 2022 related to labelling requirements of non-retail containers, minimally processed food, tolerance limit, the warning statement-related to pan masala.
According to the direction dated 22 Oct 2021, the timeline was extended up to 1 July 2022. FSSAI has proposed further amendments to the above regulation
According to the FSSAI, the FSS (Labelling and Display) Amendment Regulations, 2020 may be called the Food Safety and Standards (Labelling and Display) Amendment Regulations, 2022. They will be immediately enforced from form 1 July 2022.
In sub-regulation (3) of regulation 5, clause (b) related to per serving percentage, clause (c) related to raw agricultural processed products and clause (d) will be amended as per these new amendments.
In regulation 8, after clause 1a, clause 1b will be added related to logos notified under FSS regulations.
In chapter 4, regulation 10, labelling requirements of non-retail containers will be inserted for every packaged food meant for non-retail sale with specific mandatory requirements such as the name of food, FSSAI logo and license number, date marking and storage instructions, etc.
A list of ingredients, net quantity, etc., must be provided in a document if not provided on the label. Address of the brand name such requirements may be exempted if provided in a barcode or GTIN. Every package meant for non-sale should be identifiable.
In Schedule 1- every package of food fortified as per FSS (Fortification of Foods) Regulation, 2018 must carry the words “fortified with….” and the logo.
In Schedule 2- under the Declaration column, a warning should be mentioned related to the Pan masala advertisement.
