• The Ministry of Consumer Affairs issued the Legal Metrology Package Commodities Amendments Rules 2026. • These rules shall be implemented from 01st July, 2026. • In Legal Metrology Packaged Commodities rules, 2011, under rule 6 by adding new sub rule 10 A requiring e commerce platforms to display imported products with searchable, sortable filters showing their country of origin, ensuring transparency for consumers for better public information compliance.


  1. The Ministry of Consumer Affairs has published the Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Amendment Rules, 2026, aim to strengthen consumer transparency on e-commerce platforms.
  2. These amendment rules will come into effect on 1st  July 2026.
  3. A key update has been made to the Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules, 2011, by inserting the new sub rule 10A under Rule 6.
  4. This provision makes it mandatory for e commerce platforms to prominently display the country of origin for all imported products.
  5. Additionally, platforms must have searchable and sortable filters based on country of origin, enabling consumers to easily identify and differentiate imported items.
  6. This helps people make better choices and makes online shopping more honest and responsible.

Draft Rules on the Legal Metrology Government Approved Test Centre Amendment Rules, 2026 for comments from stakeholders

The Department of Consumer Affairs has issued draft Legal Metrology (Government Approved Test Centre) Amendment Rules, 2026, inviting stakeholder comments within one month. The draft proposes inclusion of petrol/diesel, CNG, LPG, LNG, and hydrogen dispensers under the Government Approved Test Centre framework and prescribes verification fees per nozzle. The rules will come into force upon final publication in the Official Gazette.
