This section describes the basic performance standards and mechanical safety requirements for non invasive, non automated blood pressure devices that use an inflatable cuff, along with their accessories. It also outlines the testing procedures needed for device approval. These monitors may contain mechanical or integrated electro mechanical pressure sensing components and displays. These devices are used with a stethoscope or other manual methods to detect Korotkoff sounds and manage cuff inflation.

The Ministry of Consumer Affairs released Legal Metrology (General) amendments rules, 2026 on 07 Jan 2026:   These rules shall come into force on the date of their publication in official gazette.   Under the Legal Metrology (General) Rules, 2011, Part VII-B of the Eighth Schedule is revises with the section titled: “Part VII-A – Non-Invasive Non-Automated Sphygmomanometers: Part 1 – Metrological and Technical Requirements.”   This section outlines the general, performance, efficiency, and mechanical safety standards—along with type approval test methods—for non-invasive, non-automated sphygmomanometers and their accessories. These devices use an inflatable cuff to measure arterial blood pressure without penetrating the body.   It covers instruments equipped with mechanical or integrated electro-mechanical pressure sensing and display mechanisms, typically operated with a stethoscope or other manual methods for detecting Korotkoff sounds and inflating the cuff.
