The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has issued a direction under Section 16(5) of the FSS Act, 2006, extending the compliance timeline for newly notified standards for meat sausages under the Food Safety and Standards (Food Products Standards and Food Additives) First Amendment Regulations, 2025.
Key points include:
- Earlier, the compliance period had been extended by three months from the enforcement date of 1st February 2026.
- However, based on representations from the meat industry citing technical and practical challenges, and considering that a comprehensive scientific study for risk assessment is ongoing, FSSAI has now granted an additional six-month extension from 1st May 2026.
- This decision aims to provide sufficient time for Food Business Operators (FBOs) to align with the revised standards while ensuring evidence-based regulatory implementation.
