Establishment of a TGSAFE (Telangana Standards Authority for Food and Essential drugs) through merger of the Food Safety and the Drugs Control Department under Health, Medical & Family Welfare (G) Department (HM&FW)

The Government of Telangana has introduced TG SAFE (Telangana Standards Authority for Food and Essential Drugs) as a major administrative reform by merging the Food Safety and Drugs Control Departments into a single unified authority. This integration is designed to enhance regulatory efficiency, improve coordination, and ensure stronger enforcement of food and drug safety standards across the state. TG SAFE will function through specialized wings including food safety, drug control, enforcement, legal, laboratory, and administrative divisions, ensuring focused and streamlined operations. While the statutory powers of the existing departments are retained, the unified structure will enable better surveillance, compliance monitoring, and rapid response mechanisms. The initial phase of implementation will focus on the CURE Region, serving as a model for broader rollout. The merger officially comes into effect from 17 August 2026, marking a significant step toward strengthening public health governance and regulatory oversight in Telangana.
