The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has notified the Food Safety and Standards (Labelling and Display) First Amendment Regulations, 2026, effective 1 July 2027. The amendment introduces revised labeling requirements for packaged foods, including provisions for non-retail containers, exemptions for small packages, updated declarations, and specific rules for infant nutrition and nutraceutical products, ensuring improved clarity, traceability, and consumer information under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.


The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India has issued the Food Safety and Standards (Labelling and Display) First Amendment Regulations, 2026 under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, effective from 1 July 2027.

The amendment strengthens the regulatory framework for food labelling by improving clarity, flexibility, and traceability across packaged food products. It focuses on refining existing provisions to ensure better communication of product information and alignment with evolving food categories such as nutraceuticals and special dietary products.


The key regulatory changes introduced under this amendment include:

  1. Revised labelling requirements for non-retail containers and bulk food packaging
  2. Exemption from certain declarations for infant nutrition products
  3. Updated provisions for small packages with limited surface area
  4. Mandatory identification and traceability requirements for non-retail food containers
  5. New and modified declaration rules for specific ingredients and food categories
  6. Standardization of labelling formats to improve readability and compliance


This amendment enhances transparency and ensures consistent labelling practices across the food industry.
