Inviting comments on consideration of the proposal regarding problem faced by the blind or visually impaired people to read medicines tablets/capsules strips

The Directorate received concerns about blind individuals struggling to read medicine strips. A sub-committee recommended voluntary Braille labeling on mono-carton packs, prioritizing products for visually impaired users. Exemptions include supervised-use drugs. Additional suggestions include QR codes with voice assistance, Braille cards in bulk packaging, and verbal guidance by retailers. These recommendations were discussed in the 66th DCC meeting and are now open for public comments via the CDSCO website and email.

The Directorate has received representations highlighting the challenges faced by blind and visually impaired individuals in identifying medicine strips, particularly regarding drug names and expiry dates. To address this, a proposal was considered under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act to incorporate Braille labeling. The matter was discussed during the 58th Drugs Consultative Committee (DCC) meeting on 14.07.2020, which led to the formation of a sub-committee. The sub-committee recommended voluntary Braille labeling for mono-carton drug packs, prioritizing products frequently used by visually impaired populations, such as eye drops. Exemptions include medicines administered under professional supervision (e.g., injectables, vaccines). Braille artwork should be validated by NIEPID or its recommended agencies. Additional suggestions include ensuring readable font sizes, providing package leaflets in accessible formats, and issuing advisories to retailers for verbal guidance. In the 66th DCC meeting (17.06.2025), further recommendations were added, such as Braille cards in secondary packaging and QR codes with voice assistance. These proposals are now open for public comments via the CDSCO website and designated email addresses.
