Withdrawal of Orders regarding “Usage of the term ORS along with brand names” dt 14.10.2025

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has withdrawn all previous orders restricting the use of the term “ORS” (Oral Rehydration Solution) with brand names. This decision, effective immediately, nullifies earlier directives issued in 2022 and 2024 concerning branding of products labelled as “ORS.”

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, has issued an order withdrawing all previous directives related to the use of the term “ORS” (Oral Rehydration Solution) alongside brand names.

This withdrawal revokes the earlier FSSAI orders:

  1. Order No. RCD-15001/6/2021-Regulatory-FSSAI [E-1475] dated 14th July 2022, and
  2. Order No. RCD-15001/6/2021-Regulatory-FSSAI [E-1475] dated 2nd February 2024,

which had imposed restrictions on the commercial usage of “ORS” in product branding to prevent misleading representation or misuse of medically recognized terminology.

With this latest directive, manufacturers are no longer bound by those restrictions, and all such prior orders stand withdrawn with immediate effect, as approved by the competent authority.

The notice has been circulated to all State/UT Food Safety Commissioners and Central Licensing Authorities for implementation.
