Advisory regarding non-use of Ashwagandha (Withania Somnifera) leaves in crude or extract or any other form in food products

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has advised that Ashwagandha leaves cannot be used in food products. This includes using them directly, as powders, extracts, or in any other form.

  1. FSSAI has issued an advisory dated 16th April 2026 stating that Ashwagandha leaves must not be used in food products in any form, whether crude, powdered, or as extracts due to safety concerns linked to compounds like Withaferin-A found in the leaves.
  2. Under Schedule IV of the regulations, only Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) roots and their extracts may be used in the specified product categories, provided they meet the prescribed limits, as they are traditionally recognized in Ayurveda and considered safe.
  3. Additionally, Ministry of Ayush has instructed Ayush drug and product manufacturers to restrict usage to Ashwagandha roots and their extracts, and to avoid the use of leaves in any form.
  4. Therefore, all Food Business Operators (FBOs) are directed to strictly comply with the above provisions as non-adherence could lead to regulatory action such as recalls or penalties.
