The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has notified a Quality Control Order covering electrical appliances intended for household, commercial, and similar use. The order applies to appliances operating up to 250 V single phase and 480 V for other systems, including DC and battery powered products. Mandatory compliance will come into force from 1 October 2026.
- Goods or articles listed in the Table of this order must comply with the corresponding Indian Standards.
- Such goods are required to bear the BIS Standard Mark under a valid licence issued by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) in accordance with Scheme I of Schedule II of the BIS (Conformity Assessment) Regulations, 2018.
- The Order does not apply to goods manufactured in India exclusively for export.
- Micro and Small Enterprises (MSEs), as defined under the MSMED Act, 2006, are granted extended timelines and must comply with the applicable standards from the dates as specified in the Table.
- Up to 200 units per year may be imported without compliance for research and development purposes, subject to conditions:
- Goods must not be sold commercially.
- Disposal is permitted only as scrap.
- Manufacturers must maintain and provide year wise records when required.
- Goods manufactured or imported before the implementation date may be sold for up to six months, provided the manufacturer declares such stock to BIS and has applied for or obtained certification.
