The Department of Consumer affairs releases Consumer Protection (E-Commerce) (Amendment) Rules, 2026. Effective from 1 January 2027. The Key changes require platforms to prominently disclose business and contact details, importer information, country of origin, consumer care details and seller credentials. E-commerce entities must acknowledge complaints within 48 hours and resolve them within one month. E-commerce entities shall provide all the relevant details about good such as country of origin, best before, information related to refund, return, exchange, warranty, delivery, mode of payment shall be informed before pre-purchase stage.


The Department of Consumer Affairs has notified the Consumer Protection (E-Commerce) (Amendment) Rules, 2026, which will come into effect from 1 January 2027. These amendments are aimed at enhancing transparency, strengthening consumer rights, and increasing accountability among e-commerce platforms.

Under the revised rules, e-commerce entities will be required to prominently display key information, including business and contact details, importer information, country of origin, consumer care contact details, and seller credentials. The rules also mandate that consumer complaints must be acknowledged within 48 hours and resolved within one month.

In addition, e-commerce platforms must provide consumers with all relevant product-related information before the purchase stage. This includes details such as the country of origin, best-before date, refund, return and exchange policies, warranty terms, delivery information, and available modes of payment, enabling consumers to make informed purchasing decisions.
