The Department of Consumer Affairs has issued the Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Fourth Amendment Rules, 2026, which come into force from the date of their publication in the Official Gazette. The amendment removes the earlier mandatory requirement to display vegetarian or non-vegetarian logos on soaps, shampoos, toothpaste, cosmetics, and other toiletry products. However, manufacturers, packers, and importers may continue to voluntarily declare the appropriate veg or non-veg logo on product packaging in addition to the prescribed mandatory declarations.
The Department of Consumer Affairs has notified the Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Fourth Amendment Rules, 2026, which shall come into force from the date of their publication in the Official Gazette.
Key Amendments
- In the Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules, 2011, Rule 6(4)(a) has been amended to insert a new clause (d) after clause (c), requiring that in the case of soap, shampoo, toothpaste, cosmetics, and other toiletries, a green dot be displayed for products of vegetarian origin and a red or brown dot for products of non-vegetarian origin at the top of the principal display panel.
- Accordingly, manufacturers, importers, and packers may declare the appropriate vegetarian or non-vegetarian logo on the product label based on the product's origin, in addition to the other mandatory declarations.
- Further, Rule 6(8) of the Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules, 2011 has been omitted. This omission removes the earlier mandatory requirement relating to the display of vegetarian and non-vegetarian logos for soaps, shampoos, toothpaste, cosmetics, and other toiletries.
