FSSAI West Region Seizes Misbranded ‘Alkaline Water’ for Use of Non-Permitted Ingredients and Labelling Violations

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) Western Regional Office seized misbranded alkaline water products worth approximately INR 31.61 lakh following inspection of a manufacturing unit in Gujarat. The action was initiated after a consumer complaint revealed violations, including missing ingredient declarations, improper labelling, visible contaminants, and use of non-permitted fulvic acid. Regulatory proceedings have been initiated under the FSS Act, 2006.

The Western Regional Office of the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) initiated enforcement action against a manufacturer of alkaline water in Savli, Vadodara, Gujarat, following a consumer complaint filed through the Food Safety Connect portal.

Key points include:

  1. During inspection of the manufacturing facility, officials observed multiple regulatory violations, including the absence of the product name on the front label, missing ingredient declarations, visible black particles in the product, unexplained discoloration, sediment presence, and inconsistencies between primary and secondary packaging descriptions.
  2. Stocks valued at approximately INR 31.61 lakh were seized and proceedings initiated under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.
  3. Laboratory analysis subsequently confirmed the presence of fulvic acid, a non-permitted substance under current FSSAI regulations, originating from added black mineral substances rather than natural water composition.
  4. FSSAI reiterated its commitment to ensuring safe, properly labelled, and compliant food products in the market.
