GST revision – Permission by Central Govt., under Rules 33 of the Legal Metrology Packaged Commodities Rules, 2011, to relax provisions contained in Rule 183

The Central Government, addressing industry concerns and superseding the advisory dated 09.09.2025, has permitted manufacturers, packers, and importers to voluntarily affix revised price stickers on unsold packages manufactured before 22nd September 2025, ensuring the original MRP remains visible. This action is not mandated under existing rules. Additionally, under Rule 33 of the Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules, 2011, the requirement to publish revised prices in two newspapers has been waived. Instead, stakeholders must circulate price revision notices to dealers and retailers, with copies sent to the Director of Legal Metrology (Central Government) and Controllers in States/UTs. They must also promptly inform stakeholders and consumers about GST rate changes through various media channels. Packaging materials or wrappers unused before the GST revision may be used until 31st March 2026 or until exhausted, with corrected MRPs applied via sticker, stamp, or online printing. Declaring revised unit prices on such packages remains optional.
