Implementation of revised turnover threshold for food businesses under Food Safety and Standards (Licensing and Registration of Food Businesses) Regulations, 2011

Effective from 1 April 2026, FSSAI has revised the turnover thresholds for food business registration and licensing. Small businesses with turnover up to ₹1.5 crore will only need registration, medium businesses will require a State License, and large businesses with turnover above ₹50 crore must obtain a Central License. This update simplifies compliance and makes licensing requirements clearer for different business sizes.

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India has revised the turnover limits that decide whether a food business needs Registration, State License, or Central License. This change will be effective from 1 April 2026.   The revised turnover threshold for food businesses are as follows:
  1. Registration: Up to ₹1.5 crore (earlier limit was ₹12 lakh)
  2. State License: Between ₹1.5 crore and ₹50 crore (earlier limit was ₹12 lakh to ₹20 crore)
  3. Central License: Above ₹50 crore (earlier limit was above ₹20 crore)
