The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has issued draft amendments to the Food Safety and Standards (Alcoholic Beverages) Regulations, 2018. The proposed changes include a 0.3% tolerance in sugar content for Brut Sparkling Wine, deletion of the phrase “or special wine used” from wine-based beverages, and replacement of “may” with “shall” in labelling standard drinks, making labelling mandatory.
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has published draft Food Safety and Standards (Alcoholic Beverages) Amendment Regulations, 2025, for stakeholder consultation. The proposed amendments aim to refine product definitions and labelling norms under the 2018 Alcoholic Beverages Regulations.
Key changes include:
- (1) In Regulation 3.1.2.2, a tolerance limit of 0.3% is added to the sugar content criterion for Brut Sparkling Wine
- (2) In Regulation 3.1.6, the words “or special wine used” are deleted from the definition of Wine-Based Beverages
- (3) In Regulation 5.2, the word “may” is replaced with “shall”, thereby making labelling of standard drink content mandatory.
Stakeholders may submit objections or suggestions within 60 days of publication to FSSAI for consideration before finalisation.
