Frequently Asked Questions on Legal Metrology

Department of Consumer Affairs, releases frequently asked question regarding the Legal metrology packaged commodity rules,2011 and Legal Metrology act 2009, covering various points such as MRP, Principal display panel, descriptions on footwears, verification and tamping of weighing/measuring machine, details of Model approval number on weighing/measuring machine and applicability of calliper, feeler gauge, load cells etc.


  1. Footwear Declarations: If all LM (PCR) declarations are on the box or its label, they are not required on the footwear. If sold without a box, use a tag or sticker.
  2. Retail Price: Can be declared using either ‘Rs.’ or ‘₹’ symbol.
  3. Model Approval Exemption: Section 22 does not apply to feeler gauges, calipers (electronic, mini vernier, digital), bore gauges, dial depth gauges, digital indicators, or load cells.
  4. Verification & Stamping: High accuracy weighing machines must be verified and stamped at the installation site before use (Sections 24 & 33, Rule 27).
  5. Mandatory Machine Details: Model approval number, manufacturer name, max/min capacity, and ‘e’ value must be declared at manufacture and ensured before sale/use.
  6. Institutional/Industrial Packages: No mandatory declarations but must state “Not for retail sale” (Rule 3).
  7. Brand Owner Details: Full name and address with “Marketed by” or “Brand Owner” meets Rule 6(1)(a) (Rule 10).
  8. Font Size: Rule 7 prescribes minimum height for numerals and letters; larger sizes are allowed.
