FSSAI Notifies Amendments to Laboratory and Sample Analysis Regulations
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has notified the Food Safety and Standards (Laboratory and Sample Analysis) Amendment Regulations, 2026, amending requirements for food sample analysis and laboratory reporting. The amendments prescribe methods of analysis, timelines for issuing laboratory reports and requirements for regulatory and appeal samples. For import samples, laboratory analysis reports must generally be provided within five days of sample receipt. Tards Authority of India (FSSAI) has notified the Food Safety and Standards (Laboratory and Sample Analysis) Amendmhe regulations take effect from 1 April 2027.
The Food Safety and Standent Regulations, 2026, further amending the 2011 Regulations.
Key points include:
- The amendments will come into force from 1 April 2027.
- Certificates and food analysis reports must be supplied in the prescribed Forms XI or VII A, as applicable.
- Quantities drawn for unspecified products will follow guidelines issued by the Food Authority from time to time.
- Food laboratories must use analysis methods contained in manuals amended or adopted by FSSAI.
- Where a suitable method is unavailable, validated methods prescribed by specified recognised organisations or internationally recognised regulatory agencies may be used.
- For regulatory samples, the Food Analyst must issue a signed report within 14 days of receiving the food sample.
- In appeal cases, the Referral Laboratory must issue its report within 14 days.
- For import samples, the notified or referral laboratory must provide the analysis report within five days of receiving the sample.
