FSSAI Proposes Restrictions on Marketing Dairy Analogue Products as Paneer

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has proposed amendments to the Food Safety and Standards (Prohibition and Restrictions on Sales) Regulations, 2011, to restrict the manufacture and sale of dairy analogue products as paneer. The proposal seeks to prevent products made from constituents not derived from milk from being marketed using the term “paneer” in their product names, labelling or marketing.

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has published draft amendments to the Food Safety and Standards (Prohibition and Restrictions on Sales) Regulations, 2011, concerning the use of the term “paneer” for products made from constituents not derived from milk.

  1. The draft proposes restrictions on manufacturing and selling dairy analogue products as paneer.
  2. It seeks to regulate the naming, labelling and marketing of products made from constituents not derived from milk.
  3. Products licensed or registered under the “Analogue in Dairy Context” category would be required to discontinue using “paneer” in their product nomenclature, labelling and marketing, as proposed.
