Legal Metrology (Indian Standard Time) Rules, 2026

The Department of Consumer Affairs has released Legal Metrology (Indian Standard Time) Rules, 2026 om 27 Aug, 2026 which will be implemented from 180 days from their publication in official gazette. The main purpose of this regulation is to provide framework for maintenance, synchronization and use of Indian standard time to ensure unform adoption of IST across country and promote accuracy, traceability and security in governance, public services, commerce, industry, critical infrastructure and by the public. These rules also stated that the base unit of time shall be second “s” and the standard format for Indian standard time (IST) is HH:MM:SS and standard format for Indian Standard Time (IST) with date is DD-MM-YYYY- HH:MM:SS The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research - National Physical Laboratory (CSIR-NPL), Regional Reference Standards Laboratories (RRSLs), the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), and other authorized timing agencies will provide Coordinated Universal Time (UTC-NPLI) and Indian Standard Time (IST) through their official time and frequency distribution services. No entity shall use, display or record any time reference other than Indian standard Time (IST) for all purposes.

Legal Metrology (General) Fifth Amendment Rules 2026

The Department of Consumer Affairs has notified the Legal Metrology (General) Fifth Amendment Rules, 2026, which will come into effect 180 days from the date of its publication in the Official Gazette. The amendment introduces a new Part XIV, titled “Active Electrical Energy Meters,” into the Eighth Schedule of the Legal Metrology (General) Rules, 2011, following Part XIII. The newly inserted provisions establish comprehensive metrological and technical requirements, along with performance testing criteria, for Active Electrical Energy Meters.

Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Fourth Amendment Rules, 2026

The Department of Consumer Affairs has issued the Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Fourth Amendment Rules, 2026, which come into force from the date of their publication in the Official Gazette. The amendment removes the earlier mandatory requirement to display vegetarian or non-vegetarian logos on soaps, shampoos, toothpaste, cosmetics, and other toiletry products. However, manufacturers, packers, and importers may continue to voluntarily declare the appropriate veg or non-veg logo on product packaging in addition to the prescribed mandatory declarations.

Consumer Protection (E-Commerce) (Amendment) Rules, 2026

The Department of Consumer affairs releases Consumer Protection (E-Commerce) (Amendment) Rules, 2026. Effective from 1 January 2027. The Key changes require platforms to prominently disclose business and contact details, importer information, country of origin, consumer care details and seller credentials. E-commerce entities must acknowledge complaints within 48 hours and resolve them within one month. E-commerce entities shall provide all the relevant details about good such as country of origin, best before, information related to refund, return, exchange, warranty, delivery, mode of payment shall be informed before pre-purchase stage.
