Notice for inviting public comments on the proposed Draft Amendment in the Legal Metrology Approval of Models Rules, 2011

The Department of Consumer Affairs has proposed an amendment to the Legal Metrology Model Approval Rules, 2011, to establish a fixed validity period for model approval certificates. Under the new sub-rule, certificates for domestically manufactured models will be valid for 10 years, while those for imported models will be valid for 5 years from the date of issue. The Central Government may extend this validity period if deemed necessary in the public interest, based on recommendations from the Director of Legal Metrology. Additionally, certificates already issued will follow the same validity timelines. However, manufacturers and importers may continue using these existing certificates for an extended period—2 years for domestic models and 1 year for imported models—during which they must obtain fresh approval certificates. This proposed change aims to align with international practices and ensure continued compliance with evolving technological and regulatory standards.
