Shri Rajit Punhani, IAS, takes charge as CEO, FSSAI

Shri Rajit Punhani, IAS (1991 batch, Bihar cadre), has assumed charge as Chief Executive Officer of the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. With over three decades of administrative experience across governance, policy reforms, finance, taxation, health, and social security, he has previously served as Secretary, Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, and CEO, Sansad TV, among other significant roles.


On 1st September 2025, Shri Rajit Punhani, a 1991-batch IAS officer of the Bihar cadre, took charge as the Chief Executive Officer of the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI). His leadership is expected to strengthen India’s food safety ecosystem.

Key points about him include:

  1. He is an alumnus of St. Stephen’s College and IIM Bangalore. He brings over 30 years of administrative experience at the Centre, in state governments, and on international platforms.
  2. Prior to this, he served as Secretary, Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, where he aligned skilling initiatives with industry and global standards, and earlier as Secretary, Rajya Sabha and CEO, Sansad TV.
  3. His contributions include launching pension and insurance schemes for over 450 million unorganised workers, leading India’s largest maternal messaging program, and contributing to the GST framework.
  4. He has held key roles in Bihar, the Ministry of Home Affairs, and as India’s representative to the European Union.
